Introduction to Automated External Defibrillation (AED)
When somebody suffers a heart attack their best chance of survival is early defibrillation. This is the process of giving an electrical shock to the heart so that it can start pumping blood around the body again.
This course is designed to give students the confidence and ability to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to give the casualty a higher chance of survival after a heart attack.

Course Outline
- Recap personal safety, assessing the incident and CPR
- Basic information about the heart and how defibrillation works
- Chain of survival
- CPR & use of AED on casualty
- Protocols and handing over to the emergency services
- Practical exercises
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge & practical skills to enable the student to deal confidently with a first aid situation requiring the assistance of an AED.

Heart specialist Dr Christopher Duke said Sophie 'would have survived' if she had received continuous CPR. He said 'You don't stop resuscitation just because a patient appears to be breathing. You only stop if there's breathing and a pulse.'
